Location: Mission Plaza Park, 103 Emmet Street, Santa Cruz
The fair is in its 23rd year and it brings together many aspects of Japanese culture. The fair is FREE and also features a free shuttle to extra parking and a free bike valet. New this year we also have a kids Japanese craft area.
Two things that make this fair an especially rare treat in the bay area.
You can gorge yourself on fresh mochi (sticky rice cakes) pounded before your eyes in the traditional method to live music, something rarely found at other fairs. Also unique are the colorful costumes and dances of the traditional Okinawan group Akebono kai.
Other performances include heart-stopping taiko by Watsonville taiko and San Francisco taiko dojo, as well as koto, minyou, and bon odori dance with audience participation. Also featured are tea ceremony, kimono, ikebana, bonsai, and aikido demos.
Food-wise you can try the usual fare like sushi and green tea ice cream, but also an awesome fried mochi (made by Watsonville taiko), yakitori, and even traditional Okinawan fare. New this year we will be featuring cream puffs from Beard Papa of Cupertino.
So come out and enjoy this family friendly FREE event in beautiful Santa Cruz!
