Gathering of local Bay Area artists! Come draw with us!
Exact location is to be decided, tentatively, let’s make it the park at the Farmer’s Market (1 block west of Downtown Berkeley BART on Center Street) could be a good one if the weather is nice. It’d be nice to do some outdoor drawing for a change.

FanimeCon 2009 Impressions 1/10: Prologue – Do It Because You Can

She stepped in front of me as I was rushing into the Artists Alley — a lady in a princess’ gown. With a playful smile she asked, “Are you my prince?” I stood there for a second, stumped by the random occurrence. But basing it on the atmosphere of where I was that day, I took a chance and casually replied, “Yes, I am!” Although perhaps not quite the answer she was looking for, she paused to think for a second before raising her arms, yelling “YAY!” and giving me a hug. I bowed, and she returned with a curtsey. As we parted ways I continued into the Artists Alley with one eyebrow raised, both puzzled and amused by the peculiar incident. Strange as it seemed, I realized it was all part of just another day at Fanime.

APE is one of the country’s largest gatherings of the best in indie comics, offering a venue for exhibitors ranging from self-publishers of minicomics to such large publishers as SLG Publishing, Fantagraphics, Drawn and Quarterly, Oni Press, Top Shelf, and many more. It offers a huge collection of some of the best indie and alternative comics material out there: graphic novels, ‘zines, art books, prints, original art, and comics of every size and shape. You can’t walk through the giant APE Exhibit Hall and not be inspired to either open your wallet and buy cool stuff or go home and hunker down and create some of your own. It’s that kind of show.

APE 2008 memberships are available only at the event. A one-day membership (for either Saturday OR Sunday) is $10; a two-day membership for both days is $15. Attendees who present their 2008 Comic-Con International San Diego badge get in for free. Comics Retailers with a valid business card also get in for free.
