Hi. I'm a native San Franciscan and I've been watching Anime since the 90s. It's always been a personal thing though: I don't have many friends that watch anime nor was I ever part of a club. I'm hoping to change that as I get more and more into it though. I get ripped a lot because I prefer to watch dub over subbed. It also sucks to be a dub fan because I usually have to wait until the Anime gets big in Japan before a dub is released (I'm guessing I miss out on a lot of good Anime that just never get dubbed). My favorite Anime of all time is the Record of Lodoss War OVA (yeah, real ol' school). I think the first Anime I watched was robotech, but I don't remember anything about it except the half transformed robosuits. I pretty much exclusively stick to the action genre of Anime. I'm currently watching Shippuden and Bleach (who isn't though?). I'm also giving Guin Saga a chance. When's the next meet up? Always looking for good new Anime (dub if possible, subbed... just as good) and good new friends.

Hi Avery! Thanks for posting and welcome to BayAnime!
Unless you know Japanese I think it usually makes sense to not necessarily be a fan of subtitled anime. For me I'd say that in general the quality of Japanese voice acting is better as anime is a more serious business there. Also Japanese people actually talk differently, so some translated dialogue can come off pretty weird or cheesy in English.
Our next meetup is in a couple of weeks on Saturday, the 24th of October in San Francisco Japantown. Hope you can make it!

hi and welcome!
i started with robotech too and i prefer action anime also. =)
i like watching subs because i've watched enough dubbed anime to the point where the voices started sounding the same.
and in some of the dubs the directors tweak the story a bit and the anime strays from it's original form a la harmony gold's robotech (macross/southern cross/genesis climber mospeada) or 4kids version of one piece.
i hear what you're saying and i feel that the fansubbers empower non-japanese speaking anime fans with a greater freedom to enjoy other anime titles in addition to the licensed dubbed anime.
also touching on what ann mentioned when watching dubs i have found that the vocal inflections and subtle intonations by the japanese voice actors are difficult to reproduce. i did enjoy the dub for black lagoon though.
i have friends that watch dubs because they want to enjoy "watching" the anime and not "reading" the anime on tv and i respect that.
subbed or dubbed...it's all personal preference and sometimes that can change over time or even with the particular anime.

Hi! Welcome!
I'm new here too. ^_^Posted 2 years ago # -
Great to be welcomed!
Ann: Thanks for the info about the October 24th meet up. I see the thread and I hopefully I can make it. Sometimes I find the cheesy dubs amusing, but I agree with you about the quality of voice actors in the subs compared to the dubs though.
DYRL84: The voices probably started to sound the same in different dubbed anime because they probably are the same. As far as I can tell, there's like 5 people who do all the dubs. At least one person isn't do all the voices for all the characters and doing them in a monotone voice. But yeah, it all depends on the anime.
