Gah! Evil Google AdSense ads! Don't support Prop 8!

  1. I loaded up BayAnime.com this morning and to my horror the Google AdSense spaces had "Yes on Prop 8" ads all over it! What is wrong with you, Google?! I am a firm supporter of same sex marriage rights and am VERY OPPOSED to Prop 8, which is both evil and hateful! While I can't speak for the entire Bay Area anime community, I will say that most people I know who are fans of anime and manga are also very accepting of homosexuality. Either way, the ads are completely irrelevant to this site and I am FURIOUS that they were allowed to end up here!

I've submitted a request over an hour ago to block the ads, but since Google was taking its sweet old time to comply I just took them completely off for now. If you have a site that runs AdSense and would like to block the ads too (good luck), these are the steps that supposedly may eventually work:

    1. Login to your AdSense account
    2. Navigate to: AdSense Setup -> Competitive Ad Filter
    3. Enter "protectmarriage.com" in the text box
    4. Press the "Save changes" button

  2. I found one of the ads looked pretty funny.
Thanks to their crappy text layout skills one of their banners looked like.
"Vote Yes on 8 whether you like it or not."... what?
In any case, I try to keep my site politically neutral, so I also got rid of them this morning, though filters always take a few hours to take effect.

I wouldn't say google is evil though. Their ad display system just caters to the highest bidder and that particular "protect marriage" org must be pummeling money into adwords right now. They must be desperate.
At least there should be closure to some of this tomorrow.

  3. Ha, at least the ads were poorly done! Well whether you regard them as evil or not (IMO a business that doesn't take a stand against a discriminatory policy == evil), there's no question that the ad was irrelevant and shouldn't have been there in the first place. The AdSense system of serving relevant ads is flawed! At the very least they should allow for more control, such as restricting ads to certain categories only (such as anime and manga) or filtering out specific ad categories (such as all political and adult ads).

It's weird that the ads are on your site too, lifepoint1... yours isn't even California-specific in any way...

    yea...that sucks.
    can't wait until it's defeated.

I'm with you there. Google seriously needs to revamp there adsense system. I can't believe its taking so long to get those ads off. I'm getting tired of seeing Palin and Biden smiling at me in that banner ad. For the record, Biden clearly stated that he was against prop 8.

The ads probably dipslay based on the IP or region of where the viewer is in, hence all the prop 8 crap. I'm guessing that they only show up for people coming to the site from California... don't quote me on that however.

I figured it might be something sneaky like that so I did a quick search... and found a techcrunch post that basically confirmed our suspicions that everyone in California viewing ANY Google AdSense ad is being served the Yes on 8 one. Now this seems REALLY wrong! Regardless of Google's political stance this strikes me as some kind of abuse of their ad system...

they REALLY need to institute some sort of filtering system to filter out political things, religious things, adult things, and anything else that may be "offensive" to some ppl and give them the choice of whether or not to filter them out.
At least facebook has those "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" things with their ads.
