  1. Who's going to Fanime? I'm thinking about running a panel for Bay Area locals (which includes you!) to discuss what you'd like to see more of as an anime fan in the area. More showings? Local discounts? Social events and activities?

Anyway I'm still open to suggestions, but also am wondering how many of you are planning on being there.

  2. I'm going there 200%. I'll have a table at artist's alley for sure. I'll be commissioning artwork in benefit for SJ JAM pledges. I'd like to participate too in the panel. I think maybe there should be some kind of Nexus where Bay Area groups could meet up like in San Francisco Japantown or something for a huge swap meet.

  5. I'll see you guys at Fanime. I'll also be at the Artists alley sharing a table with other artists. For the panel I think it would be nice to have an informative part talking about what kind of events and gatherings are already going on in the Bay area, and then branch into how these things could spread or evolve.

As for being informative, I don't mean just a list of events, but maybe people could share experiences on some of them. For instance, I've neer been to an actual swap meet, but I'd be interested in knowing how they work like what kind of items are popularly traded, or how the echanges are initiated. I think some people tend to hesitate from attending events like artist meetups, screenings, and other gatherings, because they don't know what to expect. Shedding some light on these things I'd say would also open up room for a lot of discussions at the panel too.

And can anyone answer my swap meet question?

I'll be there, not doing anything special just strolling around.

  7. LP: I think it's just better that people place what they have on a bulletin board, see who's interested in what and have a proper written agreement that they are gonna be there. I would hate to see someone bring in a dozen mangas and lug them around, spend their gas, mileage, wear and tear there, and then afterwards the person doesn't show up. Again, I will bring this up to the SJ JAM meetup tomorrow. [Hopefully I get over this sinus infection... I felt really sweaty and sick today.]

  8. Ann,

I didn't realize until today that as of yesterday you hadn't officially submitted a Panel Request to FanimeCon. If you're still interested, it would be a good idea to submit ASAP with as much flexibility as possible.

I'll let you know some of the unofficial places where No-Name Anime people will be hanging out at FanimeCon once we figure out more details.

  9. Hey Ed! Yeah I unfortunately got a bit bogged down with other things and just recently submitted my panel request... doh!!! Either way I'd like to try to meet up with as many people as I can individually, including your club officers/members wherever you all may be hanging out.

Random question... since Fanime is taking place indoors, (I assume) it's air conditioned, right?

  10. since Fanime is taking place indoors, (I assume) it's air conditioned, right?

I think that's a good assumption, but only FanimeCon Facilities would be able to answer with certainty. The slightly dated http://sanjose.org/meetings/facilities/docs/fug_1008.pdf says the usual practice for the Convention Center for many of the rooms where events will be is "Standard temperature control (71F-74F) during event hours." Some things, like cosplay gatherings and the line for the concert or masquerade, may be outside.

I assume you're asking about Swap Meet at FanimeCon and not how to start your own little swap meet.

My comments here are based on my past experiences. Plans for this year might be different and somethings things change at the last minute. The official swap meet info is at http://www.fanime.com/events/swapmeet.html . There's also info on the FanimeCon BBS at http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,11568.0.html .

Thursday night's Swap Meet is for people who pre-registered and is usually low key as buyers and sellers finish registration and wander upstairs to the Swap Meet. Friday night's Swap Meet usually has a lot more people and may have people lining up early to get in. See http://www.nnanime.com/events/0805fanime/index.html for some pictures of the crowded exhibit hall from last year -- it's a little hard to tell, but the solid mass of buyers offset from the wall are completely hiding the sellers and their goods.

People who want to sell should study the official info carefully. For people who just want to buy, you basically just have to have a FanimeCon badge and show up. It's helpful for buyers to bring cash in small bills and a empty bag to carry stuff. It's OK to ask sellers if they are willing to negotiate on price.

While bartering (swapping) is allowed, paying cash is usual. The variety of anime, manga, cosplay, Japanese games/toys/music and related things for sale varies from good to amazing. There's usually a good selection of both people selling used popular things cheaply and people selling rare collector's items.

  17. I was lucky enough to sign up (just barely) in time for a spot in the Fanime Karaoke contest on Friday evening. 25 spots filled up in 10 minutes! I had no idea it was that fierce. Now I've got just a few weeks to get completely comforatble with these two songs.

I'll either pull them off with flying colors, or completely butcher them and go hide under a pebble. Either way I'm hoping it'll be a good experience for the long Fanime write-up I'm planning.. or so I tell myself. What have I gotten myself into? :P

  18. You go, Steve!! Unfortunately I'll be flying in from Shanghai on Friday so I won't be able to make it... but you'll take some video footage of yourself for us, right?! :D

  19. After the Local Bay Area Anime Fans panel on Saturday, from noon-1pm, some of us from No-Name Anime ( http://bayanime.com/no-name-anime/ ) plan to hang out on the first floor of the convention center near the entrance to the Marriott (below most of the convention). This isn't an official FanimeCon activity, but any of the BayAnime folks are welcome to join us. (I tried to post his as a comment to the panel entry, but I didn't see it appear -- sorry for any duplication.)

Two other panels hosted/co-hosted by local fans I know that people might also be interested in are the "Momoist Call Workshop" from 4-5pm on Saturday and the "Anime Fans Over 30" from 11am-noon on Monday.
