We've been showing "The Twelve Kingdoms". This show is heavy in character development and the first episodes are dominated by unlikable characters. This is less of an annoyance as the series continues and this month we're up to episode 6, when one of the more interesting characters is introduced.

Also, while the political intrigue in the series is still limited at this point, remember that the summaries from our flyers are always available.

Another bit of background about one of our shows...

The episode of Planetes we showed last month featured a character who knew he had cancer. While heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and cancer deaths have been declining here, in Japan cancer accounted for 326,000 deaths or 30% of the total in 2006 -- more than heart attacks and strokes combined.

Until recently, many weren't told they had the disease. It was common for patients to place complete trust in their doctor and refrain from asking why they were receiving an operation or medicine. Family members usually heard the true diagnosis, but they often felt it was cruel to burden the patient with that information.

Does anyone know of other anime that deals with cancer?

(From "Japan's 'Cancer Refugees' Demand More Options" in the Wall Street Journal, 11 Jan 2007 and other sources.)

Tenba - 1 week ago »

Tip: For people coming to the July showing, Kara no Kyoukai episode #2 might be even more interesting if people kept in mind the differences between yin (night, black, female, receptive, negative) and yang (day, white, male, aggressive, positive).

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the content, it seems unlikely we'll be able to continue showing Kara no Kyoukai at the library, but it was definitely shaping up to be an interesting series.

Although I'm going to miss tomorrow's showing due to prior plans, I'm really looking forward to August. My work schedule is once again permitting me to make the No-Name meetings on Saturdays. Planetes and Twelve Kingdoms and the Rumic Anthology are all huge draws for me. It's been painful not attending!

"Cabal"? I don't know... I'd always though of us as more of a zaibatsu or something :)

With that said, yeah, it'd be nice to have some feedback on the shows and schedules.

I'm starting this topic as a place for people to give feedback on the shows at No-Name meetings. I'm personally not a key decider of what we show, but be assured that your comments will be seen by the cabal in charge of this.

More general discussion about the shows is fine too. Let me start with a something that I found a little confusing the first time I watched "The Twelve Kingdoms". All the dialog is in Japanese. The vast majority of characters in the "other world" are actually supposed to speak only some completely different language. High school students Sugimoto and Asano are supposed to speak only Japanese. Nakajima mysteriously can speak both languages, and she didn't realize that she was speaking the other world's language at first.
