So I finally started watching Cowboy Bebop. I wasn't immediately hooked but I must admit that the show has gradually grown on me.

After the first few episodes I began thinking about Spike's character and how he reminded me of a "wandering samurai" anitihero archetype. What was kinda cool was at the same moment that I came to this realization the following scene occured. In episode 3 in the casino there was a scene where patrons watched a black and white samurai flick while Spike walked casually by and jingled chips in one hand and then Spike paused to look at the screen. That was such a surreal moment for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPDJKKUypTM (6:11 to 6:18)...Sorry I was too lazy to find a fansub or raw link :P

I'm at the mushroom episode and so far I really like the cool vibe of the anime and the pop culture homages/references to both music and film. I also like the story-telling, pacing, character development, and depth of Cowboy Bebop.

I think I saw some Bruce Lee film references. Did anyone else see any other pop culture references?

What does everyone else think of Cowboy Bebop?

I grew up watching bill and ted movies and crap like point break. I also consider myself a decent judge of an actors capacity to perform a role.
I enjoyed the matrix trilogy, but the Animatrix blew the trilogy away for a good number of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is because keanu wasnt in it. His Martial arts talent is suspect at best, and his demeanor can be percieved as anywhere from stoned indifference,to bonafide idiocy. I liked the guy in Constantine, but Spike is a totally different breed of badass. there HAS to be someone else.....

So! Taking in all of this into consideration, i ask you reader, the following question:Who would you cast as Spike?
