It feels like it's been too long since we've been graced with a quality film from Japan or of Japanese history. I noticed there are TWO Chinese Cinema pieces out right now - Detective Dee and Shaolin. That seems like a lot. Where is the love? I think a few films were in the festival circuit, will they come to the Bay Area for release?

Three versions. One haunting tale.

A mother searches for her lost son. Driven half-mad with worry, she meets a ferryman on the Sumida River who may know something. But is she prepared to learn the truth?

The tragic story of Sumidagawa has haunted Japanese and Western artists for hundreds of years. Join JETAANC as we explore three very different versions of the story on film: Noh theatre, Kabuki theatre, and chamber opera. Don’t miss this chance to see these rarely-screened masterpieces. All events are free and open to the public. Event website: http://www.jetaanc.org/kabuki

Sumidagawa (Noh version)
September 11, 2pm, Center for Japanese Studies, UC Berkeley
First performed in medieval Japan, the Noh version of Sumidagawa has moved audiences for centuries with its particular blend of mystery and pathos. A master work in the kyojomono category of Noh play—dramas of madwomen. 80 mins. In Japanese with English and Japanese subtitles.

Sumidagawa (Kabuki version)
September 18, 2pm, Oakland Asian Cultural Center
With inspiration from Russian ballet, the Noh version was adapted to the Kabuki stage. The result is one of the great modern masterpieces of Kabuki. The famed onnagata Nakamura Utaemon VI plays the mother in one of his signature roles. 45 mins. In Japanese with English translation.

Curlew River (chamber opera version)
October 16, 2pm, Center for Japanese Studies, UC Berkeley
Benjamin Britten was a world-renowned composer when he saw the Noh Sumidagawa in Japan in 1956. Intensely moved, he vowed to write a chamber opera of the story. Transposing the setting to the Curlew River in medieval England, Britten composed a powerful and touching parable for our times. 70 mins. In English with English subtitles. Please note this is a rare video document of this piece. As such, the audio and video are acceptable, but not high fidelity.

I'm an amateur photographer looking to photograph, in costume, women for the anime blog nyanimelife.com. A good friend back home in NYC started this blog a few weeks ago. He's looking to promote his anime girl of the week. He has a couple of girls already but they don't look as anime related as he would like. I suggested he get real anime fans for his girl of the week. I don't have a budget for this so it would have to be TFCD. If any ladies are interested, or gentleman know of any beautiful women who are real anime fans and into cosplay please let me know. I'm in San Jose and trying to help a friend out. Feel free to check out the site nyanimelife.com maybe leave some suggestions or comments to help him build a better blog. Thank you all. I hope to hear from you soon.

-----

The above info is what was on the Facebook invitation. In addition, here's the break down. Yours truly will talk about the history of Vocaloid as a Barcelona University project funded by Yamaha then how it took off as an anime thing, John will detail the popular creators of Vocaloid music as well as how to search for their hits, and Terry will show us what is possible with his copy of the software. My and John's portion's should not take more than half an hour, Terry's might be longer than that, and the rest of the time will be dedicated to what everyone wants to share. So, feel free to bring in your fave songs (or YouTube links) and paraphenalia for the Fan Jam!

This event is not affiliated with Yamaha, Crypton Media Future, yada yada etc.

I'm a total manga nut, and I'm looking for complete sets of manga to take off your hands. I will pay $4-6 per book. I'm mostly into shoujo and josei if you've got it. I live up near Santa Rosa, but go to SF and the east bay often.
Send me a PM.
Thanks!

Hi everyone! My name is Celeste, and I live up near Santa Rosa. I've been an anime fan for about 10+ years now, since I started watching Sailor Moon on Adult Swim back in middle school (you do the math). I actually swore off anime when I was in college because I was frustrated that they weren't translating a lot of josei, and I was getting too old for shoujo. But I'm really happy with all the latest advances in bringing more anime over to the US with Crunchyroll, Funimation, scanlations, etc.

My other interests are roller derby, snowboarding, art (Copics+inking yuri fanart mostly) and cooking. I'm teaching assistant for a special ed class during the day, a DJ at the local roller skating rink on weekends, and a student at night. I go to Santa Rosa Junior College, where I'm studying interactive media design.

I'm excited to meet some local otaku! I don't have any anime friends, so please feel free to say hello. :)

Hello! Welcome to SF! :) I used to organize real life meetups for BayAnime a few years back but haven't had any time recently. Do you draw or anything? BAAU (a local artist club) is pretty active and does a lot of social meetups around the Bay Area... definitely recommend their club!

Hi guys,

This is Jangta from GreenTeaGraffiti(GTG), a site that promotes Asian pop culture. We know and talked to a couple of people that's part of the BayAnime community and wanted to know if any of you are interested in three contests. Namely, they are the anime, J-pop, and K-pop contests. As we're fleshing out the final details of the contest, we will have the actual contest in about three weeks. For more info, please go here:

http://greenteagraffiti.com/News/News-12-2-2010.html

Since we have members of GTG living in Korea and Japan, the prizes for the winners will be original stuff from these countries. And the best part of the contest...? It's free!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us one of four ways:

1) Join the GTG Facebook
2) Respond to this topic
3) Join the GTG forums
