December 3, 2011

Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist spotted in Fremont

Amazed by Anime? Mad about Manga? Can’t get enough on Cartoon Network? What if you got the opportunity to meet others who shared your passion? Here is your chance to walk the walk and talk the talk about your favorite form of animation.

There will be amateur and professional artists showing you how to do what they do best – getting tips and techniques to become a better artist is really cool.

There is even a craft room to make holiday presents involving, you guessed it, your favorites like Inuyasha, Naruto or Sailor Moon, or you can create your very own characters!

What? You say you enjoy anime but don’t like to draw? Perhaps you’d like to buy some of the latest graphic novels, plushies, hats, shirts or keychains with your favorites on them. Come for cosplay – dressed in a costume you created yourself – or a storebought one – vy for a prize and bragging rights! Watch a few of your favorite episodes on large screen? How about answering trivia questions at the Awesomely Great AnimeGeek Gameshow for prizes from Sakura of America and Viz Media! Those will be at the Faire as well!

Anime Fans can tell you why Anime is so very important to them:

“I’ve been watching anime since I can remember. It’s important to me because, well, I really didn’t have anyone else to play with except my sisters and we would watch anime whenever we ran out of things to play with and then after every show, we’d like talk about our favorite scenes, characters, quotes, etc.” Another fan says “Anime is important to me because it is always there when I’m upset, stressed out, frightened. It’s always there for me to relax and calm down.. it makes me laugh, cry, feel good about things. Also I’m sure it’s the same with many other people, but being able to relate to some of the stories in anime because they have been based on things and events that happen to ordinary people, unlike hollywood movies where good and bad things only happen to people living in America, the rich, the super gorgeous..

Saturday, December 3rd at the Fremont Teen Center will be the day to create, learn and share about anime – it is event for the whole family!
A mother searches for her lost son. Driven half-mad with worry, she meets a ferryman on the Sumida River who may know something. But is she prepared to learn the truth?

The tragic story of Sumidagawa has haunted Japanese and Western artists for hundreds of years. Join JETAANC as we explore three very different versions of the story on film: Noh theatre, Kabuki theatre, and chamber opera. Don’t miss this chance to see these rarely-screened masterpieces. All events are free and open to the public. Event website: http://www.jetaanc.org/kabuki

Sumidagawa (Noh version)
September 11, 2pm, Center for Japanese Studies, UC Berkeley
First performed in medieval Japan, the Noh version of Sumidagawa has moved audiences for centuries with its particular blend of mystery and pathos. A master work in the kyojomono category of Noh play—dramas of madwomen. 80 mins. In Japanese with English and Japanese subtitles.

Sumidagawa (Kabuki version)
September 18, 2pm, Oakland Asian Cultural Center
With inspiration from Russian ballet, the Noh version was adapted to the Kabuki stage. The result is one of the great modern masterpieces of Kabuki. The famed onnagata Nakamura Utaemon VI plays the mother in one of his signature roles. 45 mins. In Japanese with English translation.

Curlew River (chamber opera version)
October 16, 2pm, Center for Japanese Studies, UC Berkeley
Benjamin Britten was a world-renowned composer when he saw the Noh Sumidagawa in Japan in 1956. Intensely moved, he vowed to write a chamber opera of the story. Transposing the setting to the Curlew River in medieval England, Britten composed a powerful and touching parable for our times. 70 mins. In English with English subtitles. Please note this is a rare video document of this piece. As such, the audio and video are acceptable, but not high fidelity.

Cult director Takeshi Miike delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era in which a group of unemployed samurai are enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future. Highly prolific, Miike is credited with over 80 films since making his directorial debut in the early 1990s. Landmark films in his illustrious career inc…lude Audition, Sukiyaki Western Django, Ichi the Killer, One Missed Call, The City of Lost Souls and the Dead or Alive yakuza trilogy. The film premieres locally at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

“The year is 1844. A young lord rapes and kills with impunity by virtue of his political connections. Though the era of the samurai is fading, an honest government official covertly enlists thirteen swordsmen to assassinate this sadistic lord before he can seize more power. With the clock ticking, the assassins lay a deadly trap for the lord and his army of bodyguards, culminating in one of the bloodiest, muddiest swordfights ever put to film. As the leader of the thirteen samurai, Koji Yakusho (Tokyo Sonata, Babel) invokes Toshiro Mifune at both his most contemplative and charismatic. But it’s [director] Takashi Miike who steals the show through sheer spectacle—the climactic battle scene lasts a breathless forty-five minutes—filling the screen with visual references to more than just the original film; there are echoes of every samurai classic imaginable, not to mention some distinctly Miike touches. Let’s just say, when the blood spills it flows.”—Colin Geddes, Toronto Film Festival.
The film’s running time is 126 minutes; it is not rated.

“A classic samurai film”—Deborah Young, Hollywood Reporter

“13 ASSASSINS is a stone-cold, limb-severin’, bull-burnin’ masterpiece.”—Aint it Cool News

“The film is a relentless locomotive. Enthralling and entertaining.”—Glenn Heath, Jr., Slantmagazine.com

“Takashi Miike is in top, slashtastic form”—Leslie Felperin, Variety

“13 ASSASSINS is pure pleasure. It culminates in a magnificent 45-minute showdown that has to be the best final battle sequence in cinema since, oh Kill Bill at least.”—Lee Marshall, Screendaily.com

“It delivers such intensity that it’s hard to breath, that it’s difficult not to stand up and cheer. There are few samurai films (classic or modern) that are as satisfying as this one.”—Cole Abaius, Filmschoolrejects.com

This post was submitted by Landmark Theatres.

Related Entries

Free Film Screening: Sanjuro, Asian Art Museum, 5 Jul 09

Free Film Screening: Yojimbo, Asian Art Museum, 5 Jul 09

Big Man Japan, Japanese Superhero Comedy, opens Friday, May 29, 2009 in Bay Area

Free Private Screening of 20th Century Boys 1 at Viz Cinema, 17 Dec 09
