Harajuku Kawaii Experience is running a makeover contest and offering a free ticket to Tokyo as the grand prize! The top 5 contestants will be featured in a pageant to choose the winner during the J-Pop Summit Festival event at Peace Plaza in Japantown, San Francisco on Saturday, August 15th, 2009.

SAN FRANCISCO (April 8, 2009) – Time to bust out that Sailor Moon or Pokemon outfit and celebrate otaku (anime fan) culture! Anime fans are in for a treat as the Anime Street Pavilion returns, once again, to the Asian Heritage Street Celebration on May 16, with a fun daylong program including an anime theme runway fashion show, an anime cosplay contest and masquerade, and Japanese rock performances.

The Anime Street Pavilion, which has been a feature of the nation’s largest pan Asian street fair since 2007, celebrates the otaku culture in the San Francisco Bay Area and comes complete with local anime vendors, giving attendees a chance to pick up the latest manga. Past performers have included crowd pleasers – Thee Out Mods, ArtBeat, The Random Ninjas, The Slants, and Lemon Drop Kick. This year the Pavilion will also showcase original anime clothing lines from Japanese and Bay Area fashion designers. Attendees will also have the opportunity to win prizes by showcasing their own homemade anime costumes on stage.

The Fifth Annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 located at the Civic Center leading to Little Saigon and will feature J-cars, a Muay Thai kickboxing ring, scrumptious food, tons of arts and crafts, carnival rides and games, free hepatits B screenings, and more! The Asian Heritage Street Celebration gathers the diversity of the Asian American populations of the San Francisco Bay Area and promotes cross-cultural interaction through sharing of cultures, creation of innovative programs and entertaining activities for visitors and participants.

Japan Video & Media is once again sponsoring a cosplay contest for the upcoming annual Cherry Blossom Festival! Everyone is invited to participate in the parade, but the contest is limited to the first 100 signups only. You must register by April 12th either via this site or in person at the store in order to participate. All registered cosplayers will receive a prize courtesy of Japan Video & Media, and the contest winner will win a spot on the float!

The cosplay contest and parade will be held on Sunday, April 19th in front of City Hall. The contest check in time is at 10am and the contest will begin at 10:30am. Check in time for the parade is at 12 noon and the parade starts at 1pm.

Update 2009.02.16:

Cosplay activities will continue after the parade!

3:30pm – 4:00pm: Introduction of Costume Contest Winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place)
4:00pm – 4:30pm: Anime Talent Show (music performance)

Singers, dancers, and musical instrumentalists in cosplay (individual or group) are needed for the post-parade anime talent show! If you would like to participate, please describe your performance in the message area of the registration form.

Our Halloween Cosplay Contest will be during the intermission of our 8th showing which will be on Oct. 27th. Like our other showings, we will begin at 7:00 PM with our showing of the week, which will be “Detroit Metal City” (It says Birdy on the website). This will be followed by the Halloween Cosplay Contest which will begin some time around 8:15 until 9:00 when we begin our weeklies (Kurenai and Zetsubo). The showing as well as the Halloween Cosplay Contest is completely free to watch just like all of our other events, however membership is required to place in the contest itself. Everyone is free to come wearing costumes though the prizes are limited to our members.

Unfortunately we are still working on the specifics of the contest, however the rules for the contest are on our website here RULES. Unfortunately due to campus policies about classroom reservations, we will not be able to give an exact place until October 14th.

Updated 9.26.2008:
CAA has decided to open up the contest to everyone regardless of membership status! Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 contestants. There is no need for advance registration; just show up and sign up at the event.

Japan Video is looking for cosplayers to participate in the “Cosplay Show” to be held on Sunday, October 5th from 1-2pm at the Japantown Peace Plaza as part of the Aki Matsuri (fall festival). Dress up as your favorite anime character and sing an anime song, perform a skit, or just walk out on stage… this could be your best opportunity to show off your cosplay skills!

Pre-registration is required to participate in the show, and the last day to register is September 30th. BayAnime.com offers you the convenience of registering for this event online! Just submit your information using the form below and it will immediately be transmitted to Japan Video.

10.01.2008: Registrations are now closed! There will be 41 participants in the show. Everyone who submitted their registration online should have been contacted by Japan Video. If you haven’t been contacted, you can reach them by phone at: 415-563-5220.

10.03.2008: For those who missed out on the registration, you’ll still be able to register on the day of the event from 10:30 – 11am ONLY! If your performance needs music, please bring it with you on CD in mp3 format and make sure you submit it to Mari by 11am.
